Grow your Own Strawberrys using a Strawberry Tub
Why not try your hand at growing your own strawberries in a handy tub.
Strawberries can be easily grown in a strawberry tub, these are recognisable as urn shaped pots with small pockets down each side. Strawberry tubs come in many different sizes allowing you to find the perfect one to suite the size of your garden.
Planting your strawberry tub is an easy process. If you are using a terracotta tub make sure you moisten it first. By doing this you prevent the tub absorbing the water intended for your strawberry plants. To moisten the tub, simply soak it in water for a few hours prior to planting.
Add broken pots, stones or crock to the base of the strawberry tub to prevent water draining away.
You can then start to fill your tub with soil. Once you have reached the lowest pockets you can insert the first strawberry plants, securing them with soil as you go. At this point remember to add a watering tube. This can either be an inner tube from a roll of wrapping paper or a PVC pipe which has been pierced with several holes to allow the water to drain through. (Bare in mind if you do decide to choose a smaller tub, then you will need to water it more frequently then larger tub.)
Continue the planting process. Once you have a gap of around two inches between the soil and rim of the tub, you can then add the plants on to the top of the container and again fill around these with soil to secure. Your strawberry tub is now complete.
Pour water down the tube and over the top of the tub, then place in a warm sunny spot to help maximise the growing process.
For best results ensure your plants are exposed to at lease six hours of sunshine per day.
